Colour matchedTexture and colour matched to existing

Stucco is a system, not a coating. Behind the finish there is a base coat, a layer of building paper, and metal lath fastened to the wall. Water that gets past the surface ends up in that assembly, and a stucco wall does not dry out quickly once it is wet. That is why a small unaddressed crack in April can be a rotted section of sheathing by October.

Repairs fail for two reasons here. Either the damaged paper and lath underneath were never opened up and replaced, so the patch is sitting on wet material, or the patch was applied competently and simply looks wrong, because texture and colour were never properly matched. Both are avoidable and both are common.

What usually needs repairing

  • Cracks wide enough to slide a coin into
  • Bulging or a hollow sound when the wall is tapped
  • Staining or streaking running down from a crack
  • Crumbling or soft stucco at the base of a wall
  • Damage around windows, doors and roofline penetrations
  • Areas where stucco runs down into the soil instead of stopping above it
  • Popped or rusting fasteners bleeding through the finish

How a repair should be done

Sounding the wall comes first. Tapping across the area finds the hollow sections where the stucco has lost its bond, and those extend further than the visible damage almost every time. Cutting back only to what you can see is why repairs reopen.

Then opening it up. Damaged stucco removed back to sound material, and the paper and lath underneath inspected rather than assumed. If they are wet, torn or rusted, they get replaced. Any repair applied over compromised paper is a cosmetic exercise with a shelf life.

Then rebuild in coats, with the new work keyed properly into the existing edges, and finish texture matched to what is already on the wall. Colour matching is its own job: Tucson sun fades stucco significantly, so a perfect match to the original colour is a visible patch. Good matching accounts for what the wall looks like now, and sometimes the honest answer is that a full elevation should be recoated instead of patched.

In east Tucson, homes built through the 1960s, 70s and 80s have traditional three-coat walls that have been through fifty-odd monsoon seasons, so the repair work is usually accumulated wear rather than failure.

Common questions

Stucco Repair questions

Can you match my existing texture?

Usually, yes. Common Tucson finishes such as sand, lace, skip trowel and Santa Fe can all be reproduced by hand by someone experienced. It is a hand skill rather than a product, so it depends on the plasterer. Ask to see photographs of previous patch work rather than of full walls.

Will the repair be a different colour?

Fresh material is very likely to look different at first, because sun-faded stucco is not the colour it started as. Some repairs blend within a season. Where the difference will be obvious, recoating the whole elevation is the usual answer, and a good contractor will tell you that before starting rather than after.

How do I know if the damage goes deeper than the surface?

Tap it. A hollow or drummy sound means the stucco has separated from the substrate in that area. Softness, movement under hand pressure, or staining below a crack all suggest moisture has been getting in for a while. Any of those warrants opening the wall rather than skim-patching.

Is stucco repair urgent?

Before monsoon season, yes, meaningfully so. Cracks that are cosmetic in May become water entry points in July, and a wet wall assembly in Tucson dries out slowly. The cheapest version of any stucco repair is the one done while the wall is still dry.
